First Church Choir Presents Pergolisi’s Magnificat
Sunday, December 17 at 10:30 AM
On December 17 the First Church Choir will present two choral works by the Italian Baroque composer, Giovanni Batista Pergolesi (1710-1736). The first work, “Magnificat,” is an intense setting of the scriptural account of Mary’s reaction to the message of the angel Gabriel announcing her conception. This composition is an extended work in seven movements.
Pergolesi composed a large number of sacred Choral works, including a Mass in F and three Salve Regina settings. A contemporary of J.S. Bach and Alessandro Scarlatti, Pergolesi’s musical output was remarkable considering his short lifespan of only 26 years. Like other composers of the period, Pergolesi wrote in a contrapuntal style with interwoven choral and instrumental lines.
The works presented on December 17 are scored for strings, organ continuo, soloists and chorus. We are especially pleased to have both Robin Massie (violist) and Tim Thulsen (cellist) back with us. Also joining us to complete the string quartet will be violinists Kevin Yang and Derek Smith. Soloists will be from our own First Church Choir.
Please plan to attend on the 17 to enjoy and be inspired by these two lovely choral works. Prepare to be swept away by the energetic spirit and beautiful sound of voices, instruments and organ as you prepare for the coming season. This is a “not to be missed” event.
