The entire intergenerational community of First Congregational UCC engages the Feasting on the Word curriculum published by John Knox Press. Along with our preachers, learners follow the revised common lectionary. More information about the scope and sequence of the curriculum is available at http://www.feastingontheword.net/Pages/Item/1444/Curriculum.aspx
Adult leaders, student leaders, and learners gather each Sunday to embrace Jesus’ admonition in Matthew 19:14.
“Let the little children come to me. Do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
We call our church school program “Exploring Our Faith.”
We name our Christian Education space the L.O.F.T (Living Our Faith Together).
Under the guidance of Rev. Sam McFerran, careful lesson plans and materials are provided each week. Learners aged 6+ engage Bible stories, lead worship, welcome guest speakers, and plan outreach projects to Shaw Ministry Christmas, Heifer International, and UNICEF. Along with engaged discussion around the intersection of the Bible, our UCC faith tradition, and the culture. Our high school-aged youth participate in the summer Potomac Association project of building a house with Habitat for Humanity.
Child care providers are carefully screened and a Child Welfare Policy adopted in 2012 guides all adult volunteers. Parents are requested to fill in a form for each child, so that we have adequate information. L.O.F.T. Family Information Form. Read our Safe Church Policy.
