How do we engage the world?
We stay and we Care

We were founded in the center of the city six months after the Civil War ended. We held worship services in the Capitol before we moved into our own building. For years we were one of the few places in Washington, DC that would host an integrated event. When other churches moved to the suburbs, we stayed.
- We seek the welfare of the city.
- We are looking for new ways to serve.
- We celebrate the vitality of life in the Washington, DC area.
We invite people to join us as we reinvent ourselves in a new building at 10th and G Street NW (right next door to the MLK Library)
Second Sunday Offerings
Each month the Social Action and Awareness Commission selects one program or project worthy of our attention and financial support. On the second Sunday of each month we learn more about these outreach agencies and make an offering to those organizations. Everyone is reminded that “to believe is to do, and to do is to care.” We find joy when our faith inspires us to serve the city and wider world. We remember that Jesus said, “inasmuch as you do it to the least of these, you do it unto me.” We know that God is still speaking in many ways. We are listening.

NEXT MONTH June 10, 2012 Strengthen the Church All UCC Offering
Strengthen the Church is the special mission offering that builds the United Church of Christ’s future. These gifts help start new churches, renew existing churches, foster new leaders and grow the UCC as a community of extravagant welcome. In 2008, contributions topped $500,000 for the first time! Of the $505,552 raised, $247,009 remained with Conferences and $258,543 was directed to national ministries of the UCC. With your help, we hope to grow this offering to $1 million! Funds are shared by conferences and the national setting of the churh. Conferences may use 50% of the offering for local and regional Strengthen the Church efforts, suh as new church starts, leadership develoment, women’s ministry and youth. Conferences may provide information about their specific uses in mailings, newsletters, emails, or on their web sites. In 2012 funds will be used to: Fund new church starts and invigorate existing congregations, nurture lay and pastoral leadership, build youth and young adult ministries, and support the “God is Stillspeaking Ministry” and its extravagant welcome.
Other Involvements
- We are founding members of the WIN, the Washington Interfaith Network, a broad-based, multi-racial, multi-faith, strictly non-partisan, District-wide citizens’ power organization, rooted in local congregations and associations. WIN is committed to training and developing neighborhood leaders, to addressing community issues, and to holding elected and corporate officials accountable in Washington, DC.
- We are a founding member of the Downtown Cluster of Congregations, a non-profit ecumenical association founded in 1972 for the purpose of cooperatively meeting pressing human service needs in the District of Columbia.
- We offer music programs and art exhibits to enrich the cultural life of the city.
We founded and for many years sponsored the “Dinner Program for Homeless Women.” This outreach ministry has now spun off and lives on as Thrive DC – a comprehensive outreach program for homeless people in DC.
