Special Emancipation Worship Service on April 15

As you may be aware, the District of Columbia will observe Emancipation Day on Monday, April 16. Planning for this program has been a collaborative effort that has involved the church staff, the Worship Commission, the Social Action and Awareness Commission and the Care of Parish Commission. Of course, the Facilities Commission and others will be involved in making this a reality, and Rev. Sam McFerran, Minister of Faith Formation, has noted that Sunday School programming during the next couple of weeks will include books about Douglass. We are excited about the dynamic, creative, transformative power that we generate together.

Worship will include a living history presentation of the speech by author, historian and storyteller Bill Grimmette, special music, and a meditation by Rev. Barbara Breland , Designated Pastor at Lincoln Temple UCC, where the family of Frederick Douglass worshiped. Luncheon and a community discussion regarding the contemporary relevance of Douglass’ 1883 speech to follow.
