At First Congregational United Church of Christ of Washington, DC we assert that community responsibilities and steadfast love balance autonomy and freedom. We affirm that faith and life are nourished by “covenants,” beginning with God’s covenant with Noah, Abraham, Moses, enriched by a new covenant in Jesus Christ, and sustained by mutual covenants we strive to keep with each other.

As part of a national denomination known as the United Church of Christ we remain deeply rooted in history and at the same time we engage the future to explore new forms of faithfulness.

We do not all agree, however we know that community is important and we come together to keep each other grounded in times of stress and open each other to the wonder of life in times of joy.

At First Church the Bible is read seriously but not literally.

  • Our  preachers share insights and challenges based on scripture texts.
  • Our Bible Workbench study sessions foster discussions among small groups.
  • Our educational programs introduce children and youth to biblical stories and values.
  • Our music stretches our understandings beyond words.
  • Our prayers share concerns and celebrations.
  • Our community is bound together by covenants.
  • We have courage to doubt, and we have confidence that God is still speaking.
  • We are listening. . . . really listening.

The United Church of Christ provides a framework for our life together

Within the United Church of Christ, the various expressions of the church relate to each other in a covenantal manner. Each expression of the church has responsibilities and rights in relation to the others, to the end that the whole church will seek God’s will and be faithful to God’s mission. Decisions are made in consultation and collaboration among the various parts of the structure. As members of the Body of Christ, each expression of the church is called to honor and respect the work and ministry of each other part. Each expression of the church listens, hears, and carefully considers the advice, counsel, and requests of others. In this covenant, the various expressions of the United Church of Christ seek to walk together in all God’s ways.
