We celebrate the fact that our church welcomes people, not because of doctrines they hold in common, but because of their desire to live faithfully. In worship we  recognize that we do not know everything as we seek to expand knowledge and share mystery.  From Sunday announcements about the activities of the church, through prayers, singing, scripture, sermon, sharing of the peace, to informal conversations during fellowship hour at the end of worship, we affirm God’s love. We gather in prayer and praise around the communion table once a month and we support each other as followers of Jesus seeking to promote justice in response to God’s love.

What do members and friends of First Church do?

• sing in the choir during Sunday worship (practicing on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings);
• take responsibility to be part of small groups that provide food and host our weekly fellowship hour after worship;
• volunteer to usher, greet, lead prayers and/or read scriptures during Sunday worship;
• plan and teach Sunday school for children and youth;
• gather before worship each Sunday for informal Bible study;
• set up, sponsor and sometimes lead “nurture” programs after worship for member education and inspiration;
• represent First Church in civic organizations and at United Church of Christ gatherings;
• make financial commitments to support the life and work of the church (click below on Network For Good);
• attend congregational meetings and vote at the Annual Congregational meeting (January), the fall Congregational meeting (October) and the spring Congregational meeting (May); and
• become members of commissions, committees, or church council – planning worship, caring for people in the parish, encouraging the church to get involved in social issues, overseeing facilities, managing finances, welcoming visitors and new members, coordinating church participation in DC festivals and events, and taking on other responsibilities as requested by the pastors and the church council.
