A Christmas Cantata: Kneeling in Bethlehem
Sunday, December 15 at 10:30 AM
On December 15 the First Church Choir, instrumentalists and narrators will present this year’s Christmas musical offering, “Kneeling in Bethlehem,” with narration by Ann Weems and music arranged by Michael Burkhardt. Built around readings from the poignant poetry of Ann Weems, this major work incorporates parts for congregation as well as choir. It includes a number of familiar carols so that congregations can feel part of the cantata.
Composer, arranger, Michael Burkhardt has taken material from 26 advent and Christmas poems by the well-known writer Ann Weems to create a beautiful cantata to celebrate the season of Advent and Christmas. Weems, in a style that is reverent and faith-filled, reflects on the mystery of the holiday season. Burkhardt utilizes music from many musical styles and genres to expand and enhance the lovely texts creating a work that has been sung in churches for over 20 years.
Please put December 15 on your calendar. Pull yourself away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Bring a friend, neighbor or family member to hear this beautiful contemporary Christmas cantata. The Advent and Christmas season is one best celebrated by singing together and enjoying the combined beauty of spoken words and choral song. Come join us in singing to celebrate once again the miracle of birth in Bethlehem. I hope to see you there.
“Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!”
